The 'Trance' International 10R

The Tyson Trophy which has been sailed regularly since the late 1970's is an ARYA ranking event and one of the major races on the NSW 10 Rater Calendar.

It was a quality 11 boat fleet comprising three Diamonds, four Sanga', and one each of a Trance, a Blade 3, a Goth and a Phoenix 3. The conditions were particularly testing with the breeze shifting around the dial in the morning before settling to a shifty 5 - 8 knot South Easter in the afternoon. Conditions were not helped by the water level being more than a metre lower than normal, probably caused by fire fighting helicopters using the dam to refill their water buckets.

Racing was particularly close as Owen edged out Phil Page by only 1 point with Andrew Holly a close 3rd. Often the race winner was in doubt right up to the finish line in many races.

Special mention should go to Greg Mence who had his 1st race win in a ranking event and to Todd Sharp who showed you can still race even with one and a half thumbs!

Wayne Keavy
PRO

A note from the winner: On behalf of all the competitors I would like to thank Wayne for giving up sailing for the day to PRO the event. He had a difficult job setting courses in the tricky conditions acerbated by the low water in the dam. Many thanks to Andrew Holly for manning the rescue boat and the other Northern Mariners members for their contributions. A good time was had by all.
