France’s Alexis Carre has delivered a commanding performance to secure the 2026 International One Metre World Championship at Datchet Water Sailing Club, finishing a remarkable 40 points clear of defending World Champion Zvonko Jelacic of Croatia.

73Carre, sailing the Ian Vickers-designed V12, stamped his authority on the championship with an extraordinary display of consistency, recording seven race wins across the 18-race series to finish on just 38 points.

The victory carried added significance for the international IOM community following the recent passing of New Zealand designer Ian Vickers. Widely regarded as one of the most influential figures in modern radio sailing, Vickers left an enormous mark on the sport, not only as an accomplished competitor but as a designer whose boats helped shape the modern IOM landscape.

The V12 represents the culmination of years of refinement through Vickers’ highly successful designs showing versatility across a wide range of conditions. Fast, forgiving and exceptionally adaptable, the V12 has become one of the benchmark designs of the modern era, proving successful across national and international competition alike.

Croatia’s defending World Champion Zvonko Jelacic, sailing his VISS design, fought hard to retain the crown but ultimately had no answer to Carre’s relentless consistency, finishing second on 78 points. Great Britain’s Rob Walsh completed the top three with his Venti design after a strong and composed championship to finish third on 85 points.

Conditions over the six days of racing proved exceptionally challenging for competitors. The opening half of the regatta was sailed predominantly in B rig conditions before the breeze gradually eased, bringing A rig conditions for much of the latter stages. By the final day, the wind had faded significantly, allowing fewer than a handful of heats to be completed.

Datchet once again demonstrated why it is regarded as one of the most difficult venues in international radio sailing. Shifting pressure and constantly changing conditions punished mistakes heavily, with even the world’s best sailors struggling to put complete scorecards together.

For Australia’s team, the championship delivered moments of excitement, valuable lessons and a deeper appreciation of the standard required at the highest level of international competition.

Queensland’s Aaron Farrar emerged as Australia’s leading performer, eventually finishing an impressive 21st overall. Farrar’s regatta began in sensational fashion, finishing Day 1 atop the overall leaderboard after producing one of the standout performances of the opening stages. However, Datchet proved unforgiving. A costly rig selection decision combined with the relentless pressure of remaining inside the fiercely contested A Fleet saw his campaign begin to unravel. The experience provided a powerful lesson in just how demanding the jump into the elite front group can be at World Championship level. Despite slipping down the order, Farrar’s early championship form demonstrated that he unquestionably has the pace to compete with the best in the world.

New South Wales sailor, Paul Jones also made a strong start to the championship and remained competitive through the early stages of the regatta. Jones showed flashes of real class, including a race victory, before the demanding conditions took their toll, eventually finishing 24th overall in an immensely competitive fleet.

Western Australia’s Glenn Dawson battled through a difficult regatta to finish 29th overall with his V12. Dawson produced several encouraging single-digit finishes throughout the championship, demonstrating he had the pace to be competitive in patches, but like many competitors found consistency difficult to maintain in the constantly changing Datchet conditions.

South Australia's Alex Scapens finished 31st overall after opening his campaign with several encouraging performances. Scapens demonstrated good competitiveness early in the regatta, but sustaining momentum against the world’s best in such difficult conditions proved a stern challenge.

Tasmania's Gary McCarthy completed the championship in 49th place, grinding away through one of the toughest regattas of his sailing career. Against a world-class fleet and a notoriously difficult venue, McCarthy displayed resilience and determination throughout the week.

Australia’s final representative, Richard Smith, finished 73rd overall sailing his ProteusEVO. Competing against the strongest international fleet assembled in the class, Smith continued to gain valuable experience at the highest level of the sport.

While results may not fully reflect the ambitions many of Australia’s sailors carried into the championship, participation at an IOM World Championship is no small undertaking. Competing against the best sailors, designs and programs from around the globe requires enormous commitment, preparation, travel, investment and courage.

Datchet humbled many accomplished sailors during the week, with mistakes proving extraordinarily costly and opportunities for recovery limited. Australia’s team represented the nation with determination, professionalism and pride, and every sailor should be recognised for taking on the challenge of competing on the sport’s biggest stage.

The lessons learned from Datchet will undoubtedly strengthen Australia’s future international campaigns as the nation continues its pursuit of success in world IOM competition.
