Paul Jones recently back from his very good performance at the IOM World Championship in Brazil convincingly won the Susan McAnna Memorial Trophy regatta hosted by Kogarah Bay Radio Yacht Club over the weekend of 7th & 8th of March 2020.

The event honors Susan McAnna who played a terrific role in the administration of Radio Sailing in NSW and the Kogarah Bay Radio Yacht Club and was highly respected within the NSW radio sailing community. Her husband Matthew, a longtime member of KBRYC gives up his sailing time to PRO the event each year.

It was a quality 18 boat fleet which included Joe Roos & Mark Newman from Canberra and Andrew Wilson, who travelled down from Queensland. Boats at the pointy end were varied with a K2, Britpop’s, V10’s and a V11 all having success.

The conditions were ideal with a moderate to fresh Southerly blowing most of the weekend which enabled 27 races to be run across the 2 days. Rig choice was a key consideration and there was a lot of indecision on chosing A, B or C rigs… there was a fair bit of looking in the Jones direction for guidance!

Paul dominated the racing on Saturday, but Sunday was much closer with Owen Jarvis and Ben Taylor having multiple heat wins. Paul finally won fairly easily, however the podium spots were very close with only 10 points separating 2nd place Owen Jarvis from Ben Taylor and Mark Newman. The event was held in great spirit and was a fitting tribute to the memory of Susan McAnna. See the full results below.

The Susan McAnna Memorial Trophy is presented to the highest placed NSW skipper who doesn’t already have his/her name on the trophy. This year the worthy winner was Phil Page from the Northern Mariners club. Well done Phil.

Thanks should go to all the helpers primarily Matt who did a great job as PRO with great help from Maurie Fletcher, Ian Taylor, Ron Moon, Neil Webb and Ted Gay.

The next IOM GP will be round 2 hosted by Wollongong Model Yacht Club on the 4th and 5th of April. The NoR and online entry is available on the NSWRYA website.
